DESCRIPTION:“Ninja Events and the Struggle to\nHelp Marginal Communities Recover”\n  \nWhen:  March 13-14\, Noon to Noon \nWhere:  Princess Royale Resort\, 9100 Coastal Highway\, Ocean City\, MD 21842 \nThe National Academies of Science\, Engineering and Medicine reports that\, “As Earth’s climate has warmed\, a new pattern of more frequent and more intense weather events has unfolded around the world.” A study by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, Coastal Resilience Center\, said in their executive summary\, “Recent work shows that continual and repeated disruption caused by natural hazards disproportionately harms marginalized communities.” \nDelaware and Maryland VOAD have experienced these effects in our states through an increased number of “ninja disaster events” (intense micro-bursts of rain\, wind and/or flooding) concentrated in a small geographic area with a disproportionate impact on communities of color\, those at the margins and those living below the poverty level. \nThis year’s Annual Conference will explore: the science and data behind this phenomenon; strategies for engaging funding sources in new ways; and envision ways to develop mitigation efforts to minimize the impact of these storms and improve the quality of life within these affected communities. \nTo register for the conference you must do two things: \n1) Click here. DESCRIPTION:Anne Arundel – Annapolis Community Emergency Response Team (AAACERT) has announced its Spring 2023 dates for its 20-hour in-person CERT Basic Training class. Volunteer to become a trained member of your community in emergency response. \nThe training will be held on Friday\, April 28\, 2023\, from 6pm-9pm\, Sat.\, April 29 from 8am-5pm\, and Sun.\, April 30 from 8am-4pm at the Fire Training Academy in Millersville. A disaster simulation will be held on Sunday\, May 7 from 1pm-5pm at the same location. \nEveryone completing the course receives a nationally recognized certification and the opportunity to join AAACERT as a member. There is free parking in the adjacent garage. The building entrance is on Baltimore–Annapolis Blvd. Please note\, when entering\, the building is secure\, so there will be someone present to let you in. If you come late\, there is a “doorbell”\, or you can text Bruce Morgenstern at 410-353-7218. \nThere is a virtual meeting option\, but we strongly encourage in-person participation if possible.
